Naxos in one paragraph: the largest Cycladic island, with long sandy beaches on the west coast, mountain villages inland and a year-round ferry link to Athens. It is a good first island if you want beaches and things to do without Santorini prices or crowds.

Quick answers
  • Fastest from Athens: Seajets high-speed ferry from Piraeus, about 3 h 15 min. [1]
  • Cheapest conventional ferry: Blue Star Ferries, from about 5 h 20 min. [2]
  • Do you need a car? Not if you stay on the Chora–Agios Prokopios–Agia Anna–Plaka strip (buses every 30 min in season). Yes if you want the mountain villages and quieter beaches. [4]
  • Naxos → Santorini by ferry: about 1 h 05 min on the fastest sailing. [5]

1. Getting to Naxos

By ferry from Athens (Piraeus)

Operator Vessel type Typical crossing Carries cars? Sailings
Seajets High-speed 3 h 15 min – 4 h 25 min On some vessels 2–4 a day in summer
Blue Star Ferries Conventional ~5 h – 7 h (stops at other islands) Yes 2–3 a day in summer, near-daily in winter

Source: route data compiled from Ferryhopper as reported by Discover Cyclades (checked 24 Sept 2026) [1] and Blue Star's own page (Piraeus–Naxos "from 5 hours 20 minutes"; Naxos ships leave from gates E6 & E7 at Piraeus) [2].

Which to choose:

By air

Naxos has a small domestic airport (JNX) just south of Chora. Bus Line 1 stops at Naxos Camping, 800 m from the airport [4]. Flight schedules change by season, so check the airlines directly; we don't list times here because we couldn't verify a stable timetable.

2. Getting around: bus vs car vs ATV

Option Best for Watch out for
KTEL public bus Staying in Chora or on the west-coast beach strip Inland villages have only a few buses a day, and fewer at weekends
Rental car Mountain villages (Halki, Filoti, Apeiranthos), Mount Zas, east-coast beaches, Apollonas Narrow village streets, limited parking in Chora in August
ATV / quad Short beach hops on the west coast Needs a category B (car) licence in Greece [6]; little protection, so think twice about mountain roads

Official bus facts (KTEL Naxos)

Renting a car? Compare all the companies at Naxos port and airport in one search: Discover Cars – Naxos car hire. Check the fuel policy and excess before you pay.

Our rule of thumb: for 1–3 days on the beach strip, take the bus. For 4+ days, rent a car for at least 2 of them to see the interior.

3. Where to stay

Area Vibe Bus link to Chora Good for
Chora (Naxos Town) Port town, old Kastro, restaurants It is the hub Short stays, no car, late ferries
Agios Georgios Town beach walkable from Chora Walk Families, no car
Agios Prokopios Organised sandy beach 15 min (Line 1) Beach + nightlife balance
Agia Anna Smaller, relaxed beach village 17 min (Line 1) Couples, families
Plaka Long, wilder beach 25 min (Line 1) Space, sunsets
Mountain villages (Halki, Filoti) Traditional, cooler Few buses a day Car owners, hikers

Bus times are from the official Line 1 route page [4].
